Liwa

Liwa

It is one of the greatest oases in the world. Liwa is located on the edge of the vast desert of the Empty Quarter, and extends along an area of 150 kilometers of date farms, ancient societies and impressive castles. It is a quiet area with a friendly, hospitable and closely related community which represents an interesting pattern of the nation’s origins, since the city is the birthplace of the ruling family of Abu Dhabi. Being the gate to one of the greatest deserts in the world, Liwa contains the largest sand dunes, making it the undisputed "main camp" for desert races held annually in the UAE and a part of the world off-road racing championships as it ensures an experience full of off-road adventure.

The legendary sand dune known as “Tel Moreeb” (Hill of Terror) attracts adventure lovers throughout the year. The area is particularly busy during the winter months with the regular events of races on its slope that rise to 300 meters. There are eight historical forts surrounding the communities in the oasis, and which were built by the tribes of Bani Yas in the early nineteenth century to protect their independent authority and maintain order in society. These forts are open to visitors and form impressive buildings with majestic views for those who have the courage to climb to their peaks.

Despite the presence of the luxury five-star resorts, you need to experience camping nights under the lights of desert stars to spend an unforgettable time and to really get to know the place.
